First Sergeant Allen was a medic and was taken Prisoner of War at Kunu-Ri while tending his wounded comrades in North Korea on December 1, 1950. The Chinese virtually wipe out the 9th Infantry Regiment as they were the rear guard in “The Gauntlet” with the withdrawal of the 8th Army from northwestern Korean. Earnest died in a Prisoner of War camp on April 30, 1951. First Sergeant Allen was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. His marker at Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church is engraved as follows: “Ernest Allen b. 22 March 1921 d. 30 April 1951, NC SFC 9 Infantry, WW 2, Korea”
