Private James F. Rhodes enlisted at age 19 on 29 May 1861 at Holly Springs into company D of the 26th North Carolina Infantry.  He was present until wounded during the battle at New Bern on 14 March 1862 and died of his wounds almost two weeks later on 27 March 1862 in the Confederate hospital at Goldsboro.  He is buried in the large mass grave in Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro.  Private Rhodes was the son of James A. Rhodes.
