James W. Stevens, Jr. enlisted on March 23rd, 1943 and was assigned to Company A, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division (the Old Hickory Division). He was killed in the opening days of the Battle of The Bulge near Stavelot , Belgium when the Germans began their attack.
The 1930 census of St. Mary’s Township, Wake County , NC shows J. W. Stephens (Stevens), age 6, was with his grandparents, C. Edward and Katie Stephens (Stevens). His parents were James Walter Stevens, Sr. and Essie Thompson. A Garner, WW II veteran remembers when James entered the service that he was scared to death. He was in service less than two years when he was killed in action.
