John Dessie Cordell enlisted in the Navy on 28 December 1942 and was killed in action on 2 April 1945. On the evening of April 2nd his vessel, “USS Henrico”, was conducting night retirement from Kerama Retto as a component of Task Group 53.4. At 1838 hour (6:38 p.m.) near Okinawa an enemy twin-engine bomber “FRANCES” approached from out of a cloud cover and made a Kamikaze suicide crash on the ship, striking the starboard side of the bridge deck. As a result of the attack, 37 Navy and fourteen Army personnel were killed including the Transport Division Commander, the Commanding Officer and the Troop Commander. He was one of 13 sailors Missing In Action. John was the son of John Rufus Cordell and Laura Alice Hamilton Cordell of Route 1, Garner. He attended Garner High School.
