Lee J. Messer enlisted on 24 August 1942 and was assigned to the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. The unit was shipped to England and took part on D-Day, 6 June 1944. The 22nd landed on “Utah Beach” and for the next two weeks fought their way to the strong hold at Cherbourg. Private First Class Messer was killed on 15 June 1944 near the seaside village of Quineville, France just east of Cherbourg, France. He attended Vance School and his parents were Lewis Gid Messer and Rachel Whitley Messer.
