Sherwood RossPrivate First Class Sherwood Ross was born in 1920 to Arthur W. Ross, Sr. and Lula Callie Wallace.  He was single and working on the family farm near Auburn before he enlisted in the US Army at Ft. Bragg, NC on 3 October 1942.  Sherwood was assigned to the 329th Infantry of the 83rd Division.

The 83rd Infantry Division was activated on 15 August 1942.  They left for Europe on 6 April arriving in England on 16 April 1944.  The Division landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on 18 June 1944 after the D-Day Invasion and the Allies had secured the Beachhead.  Immediately into the battle of the hedgerows, the 83rd fought South of Carentan and reached the St. Lo-Periers road in late July.  During this battle, Sherwood Ross was killed on 17 July 1944.

He is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-surMer, France.Ross_Wilkins_2
