Though a little behind schedule, planners expect the Garner Veterans Memorial to be completed in the spring and dedicated on Memorial Day.
“It is not quite where we wanted to be, but we’re moving,” project chairman Harold Annis said as he presented a project update to the Garner Town Council on Tuesday. “We’ve got everything in place, so we are very excited about that.”
Annis said the realities of fundraising and of producing a truly impressive memorial took longer than expected. But he said he was excited about the finished product that will stand near a path at Lake Benson Park on Buffaloe Road.

Initially scheduled for completion in November, the Garner Veterans Memorial will be completed in the spring and dedicated on Memorial Day, according to project chairman Harold Annis.

“I’ve come to realize in this project we’re not building a building, we’re building an art,” Annis said. “We’ve really got a quality team moving forward.”
The project, though behind its original goal of a November completion date, will come in at budget. A share of the money comes from selling brick and bench dedications. Annis still hopes to sell another 500-600 bricks; the site’s plans calls for 2,000 or more bricks. He also hopes to sell dedications for eight to 10 more benches.
Annis said all of the contracts have been awarded, both for producing the stones and other elements of the project and for installation of the stone panels.
The memorial will feature several tall stone panels arranged in a sort of staggered tunnel. Each row on the tunnel will represent a decade, and the tall stone tablets will flank decades in which American engaged in armed combat.
