Private William Judson Gattis enlisted at Holly Springs on 1 November 1863.  He was wounded in the hand, admitted to Winder Hospital in Richmond on 14 May 1864, transferred to Danville, VA hospital on 18 May, transferred again to the Pettigrew Hospital in Raleigh on 23 May before being furloughed 26 May 1864.  William returned to duty 1 July 1864.  He received a gunshot fracture (shell) in his left leg nearly its whole length at Burgess’ Mill, Virginia on 27 October 1864.  He died the next day on 28 October at age 18.  William was the son of Thomas Gattis and Malinda Holloman/Holleman.
