First Sergeant William Urias Poole enlisted as a Private on 1 May 1861 at age 19 (student) into company E, 14th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on 25 April 1862. William was admitted to the Winder Hospital in Richmond with typhoid fever on 18 May 1862, furlough one month later for 30 days and rejoined his unit from the hospital after September 1862 and was killed at Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863. His unit record stated “…in battle at Chancellorsville, received the Badge of Honor for gallant conduct in battle”. He was the son of Hardy Poole, Jr. and Mary Ann Baucom.
